History

TMG was founded in 1992 by Tanya and Joe Matthews. Tanya Matthews, President of TMG, has been recognized by Engineering News Record magazine as a leading expert in the field of design-build construction. Joe Matthews, Executive Vice President, has constructed thousands of projects and won numerous quality and performance awards.

Since 1992, TMG has grown steadily and sensibly. As of today, TMG employs a dynamic and diverse staff of over 130 full-time professionals and craft personnel in addition to hundreds of subcontractors and consultants. TMG’s growth and success are closely linked to the quality of our employees. We are committed to growing the next generation of constructors by promoting the professional development of employees and business partners through a culture of continuous education and training.

1990s

On December 4th 1992, Tanya and Joe incorporate TMG in the basement of their house in Fairfax. Together, they build several small projects while both working full time at other companies. In the mid 1990s, Tanya and Joe purchase Trillium Farm and contract with TMG to build the barn, a berry building, and 2.5 miles of underground utilities. Trillium Farm ultimately becomes the corporate headquarters of TMG Construction.

2000s

In 2000, TMG hires Matt Monroe and Ken Matuszewski – both of whom are still with TMG and our longest serving employees outside of Joe and Tanya. In 2001, TMG was the design-builder for the County Executives of America National Headquarters new office build-out, and Tanya Matthews officially joins TMG full-time. In 2003, TMG receives the 8(a) certification and also becomes Small Disadvantaged Business, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, Women-Owned Business Enterprise, and Minority-Owned Business Enterprise certified. Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority awards TMG our first of several Task Order Contracts, kicking off hundreds of projects at both airports in the region and beginning our 20+ year journey as the IDIQ contractor of choice. During this period, TMG also wins IDIQ contracts with Loudoun County, Department of Homeland Security, US Army Corps of Engineers, National Joint Power Alliance (now Sourcewell), Arlington County, National Park Service, and the US Postal Service. Significant projects include the Metro’s West Falls Church Parking Garage, the Chateau d’Esle, the new C/D Concourse Ramp Tower at Dulles International Airport, the adaptive reuse of the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center, and the Air Rescue Fire Fighting Station No. 301 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Tanya receives the Leadership and Innovation Award from Virginia Tech’s Myers-Lawson School of Construction.
