On July 11th, TMG accepted the 2019 STEP Platinum Award from Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Virginia Chapter (ABC-VA). ABC-VA recognized the STEP Award Winners at the organization’s Annual Summer Fest which was held at ABC-VA’s headquarters in Dulles, VA.  Moose Hamid, Joe Matthews, John Matthews, Anthony Conerly, Joe Rodenbeck, (Front Row L-R) and Simone Johnston, Jason Lynch, Rick Wilson, Alan Weiss, Don Winpigler and Rusty Cook (Back Row L-R) represented TMG at the event.

The STEP (which stands for Safety Training Evaluation Process) Platinum award demonstrates TMG’s outstanding safety performance and commitment to training and incident prevention. Only 3 percent of the entire ABC membership meets the exacting standards of the Platinum designation. In order to receive the Platinum level award, TMG must have a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of at least 25% below the average, a very low Experience Modification Rate (EMR), zero OSHA citations in the last three years, and high marks on ABC’s 200 Key Safety Components score card.

This is the fifth time TMG has received this award, having earned the STEP Gold award in 2011 and the STEP Platinum award in 2012, 2016, and 2018.

When TMG Construction wins a safety award, it is a special moment for all of us.  With great joy, excitement and jubilation, TMG Construction received the 2019 Award of Excellence (Platinum in Construction – General Contractor) at the 96^th Chesapeake Region Safety Council’s annual meeting on June 7, 2019.  This recognition is for achieving the highest level of safety performance within the organization through the safety activities to prevent accidental injury or death.  The safety award was humbly accepted by Moose Hamid and Gia Parrott on behalf of every employee of TMG Construction, joint venture partners, and subcontractors.  This safety award is not due to luck, but due to the hard work and persistence by every member of TMG Construction and joint venture partnership.  Congratulations to all for such great achievement!!!

TMG Construction is currently in the process of demolishing a 90-year-old, 30-foot-high, rusted-out metal salt dome in Arlington, Virginia.  The project involves clearing, grading, and paving a lot adjacent to the existing dome.  The next phase involves erecting a temporary, 47-foot-high canvas facility to store road salt.  The final phase involves demolishing the old and dangerous existing facility.

The Salt Dome Replacement project was awarded to TMG as an emergency purchase order by Arlington so that the salt dome could be up and operational before the 2018-19 snow season.  This project was not awarded under our Arlington JOC, but Arlington relied on our reputation built from the JOC program to be able to meet their exceptionally accelerated schedule.

Last April, engineers determined that the existing salt dome was unsafe and at risk for collapsing. The facility holds about 60% of the road salt reserved for icy and snowy streets on the north side of the county.  The project gained notoriety and significant press coverage when the County determined there was an urgent need to replace the salt dome before the start of the winter season and that time was too short to convene the typically extensive community discussions and survey of alternatives. The salt dome facility sits on a 7.5-acre government owned site used for storage and open space.

Arlington County Central Library to get $1.7M upgrade

The Arlington County Board has approved a $1.7 million contract to begin upgrading the county’s Central Library branch this fall.

The library, located at 1015 Quincy St., will remain open during the renovation, which starts in the fall and is expected to last one year.

“This is the most significant upgrade to our Central Library space in decades,” said County Board Chair Jay Fisette.

“Generations of Arlingtonians have enjoyed our library’s many resources — this refresh will help ensure it remains a relevant, vital resource for residents of all ages and all interests.”

The contract was awarded to Arlington-based TMG Construction Corp., whose other interior design projects have included the World Bank and Reagan National and Dulles International airports.

The improvements will include new meeting rooms, redesigned public computer stations, new furniture for reading and study areas, modernized shelving and reference stations and Americans with Disabilities Act improvements.

The total budget for the project is $2.9 million, and includes project management, permits, design, construction and furniture costs.

The Arlington County Central Library opened in 1961.

In addition to books, it also lets county residents with a library card check out garden tools.
