President Obama paid a second visit to a TMG job site when he gave a press conference on his economic stimulus plan at the South Loop Road construction project at Fort Belvoir's New Campus East. He was joined by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and the president of heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar.
TMG loaders, dozers and trucks on the South Loop connector road, which was just punched through over the weekend, were the backdrop for the President's dramatic speech. The busy construction jobsite helped President Obama hammer home his point that real-world consequences of both the economic downturn and provisions in the bill will create jobs and rejuvenate the economy. The President underscored that projects such as the unfinished Fairfax County Parkway connector road could get a jump-start from the bill. The road serves the new east campus of the National Geospatial Agency and is seen as key to easing increasingly brutal traffic congestion. The project's initial phases are under way but more money is needed to finish it.
The $10 million South Loop Road and Substation project awarded to TMG Construction are part of $77 million allotted for infrastructure work. The overall NGA project is expected to exceed $1.7 billion. More than 8,500 individuals are expected to be reassigned to the facility by 2011.
Col. Mark Moffitt with the USACE was pleased with the event. "Thank you very much for all of the support in setting the stage. Everyone's help from you, Buddy Billington, Bill Stout, and Taylor Vogel (TMG) was outstanding," he wrote in an e-mail. "The guys from TMG even loaded the large dump trucks with earth to assist the Secret Service with security. The construction equipment in the background was looking great too."
Shortly after delivering his speech, President Obama received word that Congress had passed a final version of the $789 billion economic stimulus package.
