Keeping DCA Safe with ASDE-X
October 27, 2009
Nancy Baker
TMG's Special Projects Team is making great headway on FAA's latest project at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). TMG is performing all critical site preparation to support the installation of the Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X System. The ASDE-X is a traffic management system for the airport surface and is designed to track aircraft and vehicle movement, as well as provide aircraft identification to air traffic controllers. The system uses a combination of surface movement radar and transponder multi-lateration sensors to display aircraft positions in the Air Traffic Control Tower. The integration of these sensors provides data with an accuracy, update rate and reliability suitable for improving airport safety in all weather conditions. The project crew has constructed 36-inch x 3 ft. deep circular pier foundations and installed fiberglass masts at nine locations of the airport, including two installations in the air traffic control tower and one at the weather facility. Work also has involved installation of conduit raceways, grading for access to the antennae and equipment pad foundations for remote unit control boxes that do not have masts.

Subcontractors include Natelco Corporation; Commonwealth Paving, Inc.; Newborg, Inc. and National Cable Construction, Inc. TMG has self performed all the site work.
