BIS Systems Administrator
 
Position Description
TMG's BIS Systems Administrator is responsible for managing, monitoring, repairing, and expanding TMG's enterprise network and systems operated by its Business Information Systems (BIS) department. The BIS Systems Administrator is responsible for performing routine systems and network administrative functions, monitoring the health and availability of network resources, and planning, engineering, and deploying various upgrades and expansions as needed. This is a highly technical role with an emphasis on providing a best in class platform for TMG's ever growing operations. The Systems Administrator reports to TMG's Director of Business Information Systems.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine system administration tasks including but not limited to user provisioning, storage maintenance, application configuration, server installations, PBX management, security auditing, and fault analysis.
  • Monitor network and system resources to ensure availability. Pro actively perform preventative maintenance to maximize uptime. Track open issues in BIS’s ticket tracking system. Notify users of outages and expected repair times.
  • Monitor network and server performance. Establish baselines and report on irregular activity. Implement performance tuning measures. Recommend upgrades to increase performance and throughput when necessary.
  • Monitor support queues within BIS’s help desk. Prioritize issues as needed and assign tasks to help desk support specialists. Respond to escalation requests and take ownership of issues affecting system and network assets.
  • Work with telecommunication providers to repair down / out-of-service WAN circuits including T1, DSL, Ethernet over fiber, DoCS, and 4G cellular data circuits.
  • Design and engineer projects to expand, increase capacity, or add new services to BIS’s network. Specify hardware and software requirements. Develop budgets and acquire quotes for competitive pricing.
  • Maintain TMG’s enterprise email network to include its associated Microsoft Exchange environment, internal and external mail relays, spam filters, and backup / archive systems.
  • Provide production support to BIS’s development team. Review release notes and develop back-out plans for software pushes. Perform software pushes from staging to production environments. Verify releases and report problems to the development team.
  • Perform basic DBA functions when required. Verify database availability and operations, monitor backups, and manage security and access of databases.
  • Manage backup procedures and operations. Verify that backups are current, consistent, and reliable.
  • Develop disaster recovery plans. Update plans as new services are brought online. Test and verify disaster recover procedures.
  • Install and configure new network components including servers, switches, routers, firewalls, and other similar devices.
  • Manage TMG’s Avaya IP Office based phone system (VoIP). Provision new extensions and users. Monitor circuits and trunks. Make changes to hunt groups, call routes, and other parameters as required. Work with an Avaya subject matter expert for complex programming when needed.
  • Create and maintain documentation of the physical and logical network, server configurations, IP addressing, software configurations, and other related assets. Regularly publish updates.
  • Develop scripts to automate, enhance, or simplify system administration functions.
  • Mentor and train junior staff in technical subjects.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or similar field.
  • One to Three years of experience managing / administering a production enterprise network.
  • Expert knowledge of Linux / UNIX / Windows operating systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of network and telecommunication engineering and operations.
  • The ability to obtain a U.S. federal government TS security clearance
  • The ability to effectively communicate both in the English written and spoken word
